Background of the Study
Peaceful coexistence in diverse societies is increasingly viewed as essential for sustainable social development. In Sokoto South LGA, Sokoto State, religious education is posited as a key driver in promoting harmony and understanding among undergraduate students. The curriculum, which encompasses religious doctrines, ethical principles, and intercultural dialogue, is designed to nurture an environment of mutual respect and peaceful interaction (Ibrahim, 2023; Suleiman, 2024). Universities in the region incorporate modules that address conflict resolution, tolerance, and the importance of peaceful coexistence, drawing upon religious teachings that advocate for compassion, forgiveness, and community solidarity. These programs encourage students to critically engage with issues related to intergroup differences and to develop skills in mediation and dialogue (Abubakar, 2023). In a context marked by socio-cultural and religious diversity, religious education provides a framework for understanding and reconciling differences. The curriculum is enriched with case studies, role-playing exercises, and seminars that foster an appreciation for pluralism and non-violent conflict resolution. Despite these efforts, challenges such as entrenched prejudices, lack of inter-religious dialogue, and insufficient practical application of peaceful principles persist (Umar, 2023). Moreover, the rapid social changes and the influence of global conflicts underscore the urgency of reinforcing educational strategies that promote peaceful coexistence. This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of religious education in fostering peaceful coexistence among undergraduate students by examining curriculum content, teaching methodologies, and student perceptions. Using mixed methods, the research will analyze both quantitative survey data and qualitative interviews to provide a comprehensive understanding of how religious education contributes to conflict resolution and social harmony (Aminu, 2024). The findings are anticipated to offer valuable insights for educational policymakers and university administrators seeking to strengthen peace education initiatives in Sokoto South LGA.
Statement of the Problem
Although religious education is designed to foster peaceful coexistence, persistent challenges undermine its effectiveness among undergraduate students in Sokoto South LGA. Many students continue to harbor biases and engage in behaviors that contradict the principles of tolerance and mutual respect taught in the curriculum (Ibrahim, 2023). Factors such as inadequate integration of conflict resolution skills, limited interfaith dialogue, and the influence of external socio-political tensions contribute to a disconnect between curricular intentions and student attitudes (Suleiman, 2024). Faculty members report that while theoretical teachings on peace and coexistence are provided, there is often a lack of practical strategies that enable students to resolve real-life conflicts amicably. Moreover, entrenched cultural stereotypes and historical grievances further complicate efforts to promote harmonious relationships among diverse student groups. The absence of a comprehensive evaluation of the current religious education curriculum in this context has led to uncertainties about its actual impact on fostering a culture of peace. This study aims to address these challenges by systematically investigating the role of religious education in shaping attitudes towards peaceful coexistence. By examining the experiences of students, educators, and administrators, the research seeks to identify the strengths and weaknesses of current pedagogical approaches and propose evidence-based interventions that can bridge the gap between theoretical instruction and practical application (Abubakar, 2023). Ultimately, the study will contribute to developing more effective educational strategies that enhance intergroup understanding and conflict resolution, thereby promoting a sustainable culture of peace in the academic environment.
